Caring for Your Hair Extensions

Properly caring for your THYKK hair extensions will keep them looking super sleek for much longer. Here's our guide to caring for your gorgeous mane.

PROTECTING

As all THYKK hair extensions are 100% Remy human hair they can be styled just as you would style your own hair. How fun is that? Heat tools can be used to create bouncy curls or keep your locks super straight. Blowing out your hair is also welcome, best practice though? Protect your hair from the heat with a heat protector. In order to preserve and extend the life of your hair (aka prevent breakage and split ends) we recommend using a heat protectant spray, or natural oil.

Some natural oils you can use on your hair are Grapeseed Oil, Almond Oil and Shea Butter. Just a few drops run through damp hair before you begin styling is enough to protect your hair and give it its daily dose of vitamins! These oils respond similarly to silicone products in that they coat the hair strand and create a protective barrier around the hair cuticle. All these oils have naturally high smoking points and can be found in your grocery store. Make sure to buy pure, cold-pressed organic oils when possible.

STYLING

When using heat tools we recommend a heat setting at or lower than 120C or 250F for Clip Ins and Halos. Anything hotter than this may do more damage than good as these types of extensions aren't being naturally conditioned by the oils from your scalp.

We're also obsessed with heatless ways to dry and style your hair. Try rollers, rods or wraps to create big curls without the heat.

NOURISHING

As your Clip In and Halo extensions aren't getting the natural oils from your scalp that keep your natural hair shiny and conditioned, it's important to invest in a product that can do this for you.

When possible, we love organic products, not only are they nourishing for the hair they're also great for our Mamma Earth. If organic isn't an option look for products that are alcohol-free and sulfate-free. These two ingredients tend to dry out hair leaving it a bit too frizzy and more easily susceptible to knotting.

For installed extensions pay extra attention to conditioning from the shoulders down, as that's a long way for our natural oils to travel.

WASHING

For hair that has been installed, like Tape Ins, Fusions and Wefts only use silicone-free, sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoos and conditioners.

Clip In and Halos can also be washed with sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoos and conditioners. As these extensions are worn for a shorted length of time, and not overnight, they don't have to be washed as often. Try washing only when there is too much product build up or when they become difficult to style. We recommend every 15-20 wears. Remember, the less you wash your extensions the longer they will last.

BRUSHING

Like all hair, your hair extensions will naturally tangle. We recommend using the Nylon Hair Extension Brush for working these babies out. The THYKK Nylon Extension Brush is made with short and long bristles to gentle untangle knots.

For installed extensions we recommend brushing throughout the day, so pack that brush with you to keep your hair looking its best!

SLEEPING

For installed hair extensions like Tape Ins, Fusion and Wefts we recommend a loose braid and sleeping on a silk pillow case. The braid and silk will keep your hair tangles to a minimum, and the silk won't pull oil from your hair, like a more absorbent cotton pillowcase would.
